The 12thLamu Cultural Festival will be taking place from the 15th to 18thNovember at the Lamu Old Town. Lamu Old town has been in existence for over 700 years which makes it very rich in historical heritage. Lamu was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2001 and since then the town has played host to the Lamu Cultural Festival. The Festival is an annual celebration of the unique Swahili heritage of the Lamu Archipelago.
The Lamu Cultural Festival is organized by the Lamu Cultural Promotion Group (LCPG) under the auspices of the Kenya Tourist Board. The three-day event showcases the traditional dances, handicraft displays, a Swahili bridal ceremony, musical performances as well as Swahili poetry. The Festival also showcases donkey and dhow races. The dhow race is billed as the biggest dhow race in the world and features two classes’ namely large and small dhows. The donkey race is also unique to Lamu as no cars/automobiles are allowed in the Island making donkeys the primary source transport within the Island.
Apart from that, the Lamu Cultural festival is a wonderful opportunity to experience the island’s unspoilt beaches, medieval ambience, architecturally magnificent Old Town, gracious and welcoming population as well as the traditions of an enchanted island where history continues to live.
