Zanzibar Fashion Week returns for the second edition

(Posted 05th August 2014)

Zanzibar will be the place where fashion maestro Javed Jafferji will do ‘his thing’ next month, as the second edition of the Zanzibar Fashion Week goes underway in exactly 50 days. The location will be the picturesque Old Fort where between 25th and 27th of September some of East Africa’s leading models as well as a selections of new faces will strut their stuff, showcasing East African fashion inspirations of local designers using local materials. The bright colours of local kangas and kitenges and the blend of cultures evident on the Spice Island will be the main drivers to show off dazzling combinations of materials and accessoires. Seven Zanzibar based designers will have their season’s work shown on stage, alongside two mainland based designers and two more from Burundi and Pakistan.

Model casting has been set for the 13th of September at the Alliance Francaise in Dar es Salaam from 10.00 hrs. As the event is thought to draw in large number of visitors from the mainland and from across Eastern Africa it is advisable to make early travel arrangements, book airline tickets and secure accommodation for the duration of the event, which in 2013 surprised the organizers with the massive interest shown. Fashion workshops drew in spectators as well as amateur designers keen to learn from their peers, merchandise stands invited to browse and shop and fashion parties every night – by invitation only – created the right social scene to celebrate and have fun.
