(Posted 08th December 2014)

Asmara now has nonstop flight links to Doha’s Hamad International Airport after the inaugural flight took place a few days ago. The twice weekly service on Thursday and Saturday out of Doha connects Eritrea’s capital to the rest of the QR world, now comprising a total of 146 destinations around the world.

The Qatari delegation on board was led by the airline’s Chief Commercial Officer Mr. Marwan Koleilat who represented the CEO Mr. Akbar al Baker. In his address did Mr. Koleilat say: ‘Qatar Airways is proud to be the first five-star airline to launch non-stop flights to Asmara and the commencement of our services here is another example of Qatar Airways’ commitment to opening up access to markets that we believe have great potential. On behalf of our Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, I would like to offer my sincere thanks to the government officials, airport authorities and the travel trade here in the city of Asmara who have been tremendously supportive of this new service. The start of our five-star services to Eritrea signifies our commitment to opening our doors for even stronger business ties and supporting greater commercial development with the international business community’.

Operating a fleet of 142 aircraft and having a further 340 on order, including 80 state of the art Airbus A350XWB and 100 Boeing B777X’s is Qatar Airways set to become a global aviation giant over the next few years and their brand new Hamad International Airport is currently rated as the best in the world, awaiting confirmation of that perception when the next Skytrax ratings are released.

In the wider Eastern Africa region does Qatar Airways also fly to Addis Ababa, Entebbe, Kigali, Nairobi, Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro International Airport.
