Lion Kids Camp Engages Turkana and Samburu Herders

This year, we have introduced a new type of Lion Kids Camp where the focus is on young livestock herders. Herding children spend most of their time in wildlife areas looking after their family’s livestock, yet have limited to zero exposure to conservation education and training. By engaging herders through our Lion Kids Camp program we hope to have an immediate positive impact on wildlife.

In April, we held our 7th Lion Kids Camp and brought together 26 young herders from two different tribes: Turkana and Samburu. The children relished the opportunity to learn about their local wildlife and participate in conservation-themed activities including wildlife safaris, dramas, creative arts sessions, and our special conservation game.

Perhaps the most exciting thing for us was to see the children from the two tribes – between whom there is often conflict – come together in such a positive way.

This area’s ample water supply has led wildlife, people and livestock to converge, resulting in increased conflict. Watch this video showing the remote area and our team who is camping there safeguarding lions day and night.

Watch a video showing how local women construct their traditional houses. In the Samburu culture, women come together to build a house, which is handmade from mostly natural materials. In a fast-changing Kenya, watching these women proudly displaying their traditional cultural practices was a real pleasure and very humbling.
