It’s the time of the year when the chimpanzee community at Ngamba Island gets shivers; it’s health check season. Hundreds of vets and volunteers have been trained over the years at Ngamba, this year we are happy to be joined by Victoria Albino from the veterinary school of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. We were also joined by our friend M/s Kristina Moeller, Veterinarians from Uganda Wildlife Education Center and the Jane Goodall Institute.
The entire exercise begins a day before; chimps to be examined the next day are selected, and we ensure they don’t leave with the group to the forest the morning of the healthy check something which betrays the Vets; cause these individuals realize it’s time.
To date all the chimpanzees have been examined and pronounced healthy.
THE AFRICAN PRIMATOLOGICAL SOCIETY CONFERENCE
Uganda is set to hold the 2nd congress of the African Primatological Conference (APS) from 2nd to 6th September 2019 at Imperial Botanical Beach Hotel in Entebbe. Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust (CSWCT) is a member of the Organising Committee and meetings are already underway, chaired by Conservation Through Public Health in collaboration with other conservation organisations and government agencies.
According to Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka, CTPH Founder and CEO who is also Vice President of the APS, “The APS is officially affiliated to the International Primatological Society (IPS) and a great opportunity to build African leadership in primate research and conservation”.
Uganda has an abundance of primates, and is known as the primate capital of the world, where we have 15 species of primates including endangered mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, and different species of monkeys, baboons and bush babies. WORLD CHIMPANZEE DAY 2019
About 40,000 hectares of natural forests are lost every year in Uganda alone, because of deforestation. 60 percent of this is in Chimpanzee Habitat. We encourage those visiting the Island to plant a tree in an effort to support restoration efforts in the Albertine Rift Area. You may also adopt a tree/tress for the conservation of chimps by donating to Chimpanzee Trust

We would like to thank everyone who took part in the World Chimpanzee day celebration on 14th July. We were able to get donations of $350 worth 350 trees which are being planted at Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Hoima in the chimpanzee corridors. We can do more to reach the target of planting 3500 trees this month. You can donate a tree or more today.
