It was Alain St. Ange and his One Seychelles party which first demanded that the Presidential elections set for October this year must be held alongside legislative elections. His declared aim then was to not only upset the political powers that be at the helm of the country but also to create a new reality in parliament.
It now appears that his call for a joint election date has rattled government to the point of announcing that the legislative assembly too will have to be elected on the same day, citing cost reasons, a point also made by St. Ange at the time.
Elections for parliament were due for next year but the announcement yesterday cuts short the lifespan of the present legislative assembly and brings the election dates in line similar to what many other countries also do.

No opinion polls are available from the Seychelles at this stage but it is expected that such insights will be provided closer to the dates of the election.
