 The African Airlines Association (AFRAA) and the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU). The MoU will reinforce the collaboration between AFRAA and AFCAC to facilitate the achievement of their shared objectives and enhance their effectiveness in serving the interests of their respective members. The MoU was signed by Abdérahmane Berthé, AFRAA’s Secretary General and Ms. Angeline Simana, AFCAC’s Ag. Secretary General. Under the MoU, AFRAA and AFCAC will align their actions and work jointly on various areas including: Aviation Safety Air Transport Liberalization – YD adoption and implementation of SAATM Efficiency of Air Navigation Systems – Technology advancementAviation Security and Facilitation Environment Human Capital development – Capacity Building Infrastructure and Regional integration Aviation Taxes/charges and traffic statistical data exchange Research and Development Aviation related Studies Exchange of statistical data, information and best practices Mr. Abdérahmane Berthé stated: “AFRAA and AFCAC share the common objective of promoting the development of a safe, reliable, efficient and environmentally sustainable air transport system in Africa and thereby effectively contribute to the continent’s socio-economic development and integration. Consultation and close cooperation between AFRAA and AFCAC will facilitate our effective participation and contribution to the overall sustainability of the air transport industry as well as the implementation of our industry projects, initiatives and actions. AFRAA is delighted to sign this MoU with AFCAC that will forge a stronger working relationship between our two organisations for the development of air transport in Africa.” Ms. Angeline Simana stated: “We are excited that our joint programmes as outlined in the MoU would enable us to work together to create a conducive environment for the air transport industry in Africa. Our collaboration will capitalize on our respective strengths and areas of expertise to better meet the needs of the all stakeholders.” AFRAA and AFCAC annual plan of activities will be guided by a joint action plan for the effective implementation of the MoU. Meanwhile has it been confirmed that the AFRAA Secretary General will join aviation leaders in a panel session at the Global Aviation Webinar, 17th of February 2022.  Global aviation has been historically vulnerable to external shocks such as economic crises, geopolitical tensions, oil prices, militant terrorism, and public health outbreaks. The COVID-19 pandemic has not only accelerated some of the social trends and technological developments observed in pre-pandemic years, but it has also reenergized the global aviation industry in unexpected ways, creating opportunities for collaboration, innovation and future visioning. This roundtable brings together influential regional voices from around the world to discuss the challenges ahead on how to advance a common path towards sustainability. In addition to regional updates from each of the speakers, some of the questions that will be discussed will include: how can regional experiences and current initiatives inform the way forward? How can we close the economic and infrastructure gaps that exist across regions? What are the obstacles to achieve the common path towards sustainability? How can we ensure that global aviation does not become a tool of coercive diplomacy in the coming years? About AFCAC The African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) was created by the Constitutional Conference convened by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the then Organization of African Unity (OAU) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in 1964. AFCAC was fully established and began functioning in 1969 and on 11 May, 1978 became an OAU Specialized Agency in the field of Civil Aviation. From inception, AFCAC was technically, administratively and financially managed by ICAO through African member State’s contributions. AFCAC became autonomous from ICAO management on 1st January 2007. AFCAC today comprises 54 African States and is managed through a triennial Plenary (consisting of all member States).
