Exactly one year ago, the first southern white rhino began their journey from captivity to the wild – leaving behind the former breeding project and stepping into a new future.
It was a defining moment in Rhino Rewild – a bold conservation initiative to return 2,000 rhino to well-managed protected areas across Africa. Since then, 376 rhino have been moved from the project site. More than 200 rhino are now settled in safe landscapes – and already, 33 calves have been born in the wild, offering early signs of growth and renewed stability for these relocated populations.
To mark this milestone, we’re sharing two powerful stories:
A Year of Movement
Charting the first 12 months of rewilding, and the progress made as we work to relocate 2,000 rhino across the continent.
From Farm to Freedom
Discover how a commercial rhino farm became a conservation hub – and why this matters for the future of the species.
On a day that draws attention to the plight of the planet’s most threatened species, this journey offers a rare story of hope. If you want to ensure that rhino — and other vulnerable wildlife — can thrive in safe, well-managed landscapes, please support us today.
