UNWTO is hitting the nail right on the head and thankfully the tourism ministerspresent in Luanda last week made it clear that the African Union should stay away
from their plans to tax air tickets and tourism businesses unless they want to risk
inflicting serious damage on sectors which are already under siege. Tourism is an
export, an invisible export, and as such should be treated like any other export
industry and not a convenient cash cow to make up for budget shortfalls oftentimes
caused by corruption, ineptitude and the tendency to create white elephant projects
gobbling up billions for little if anything in return.
Well done UNWTO and well done to the tourism ministers taking a stand that tourism
and aviation in Africa need government support, not being taxed out of existence.
