DREAM TO GROW THE NETWORK TO KEY AFRICAN DESTINATIONS SUFFERS SETBACK

Air Tanzania has confirmed that they will suspend flight operations to Johannesburg, South Africa’s commercial capital, indefinitely. Tickets already
paid for are due for a full refund and passengers booked will have to find another airline to reach South Africa.
When Air Tanzania and government officials recently cited xenophobic attacks in South Africa for the suspension, did this raise more questions than provide answers and was promptly seen as a cover up over the real reasons for the route suspension.
A few weeks ago was an Airbus A220 of Air Tanzania impounded in Johannesburg, as ATCNews had at the time reported. When the aircraft was eventually returned, with the High Court order overturned, did that however not signal the end of the legal battle between a South African citizen and the Tanzanian government and fresh action could provoke a similar outcome. Also were traffic numbers reportedly not overwhelming and thus raising questions on the financial viability of the route.
ATCL launched the route on the 28th of June, offering four weekly flights between DAR and JNB on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
ATCL continues to fly to Entebbe in Uganda, Lusaka in Zambia, Harare in Zimbabwe, Bujumbura in Burundi and the Comoros. Current single long haul destination is Mumbai.
Domestically does the airline serve Zanzibar, Mwanza, Kilimanjaro, Dodoma, Mbeya, Kigoma, Mtwara, Songea, Tabora and Iringa.
