Another crash worsens South Sudan’s aviation safety record

A 45 year old DHC-5A Buffalo, on landing in Pieri Payam reportedly veered off the runway and then hit some buildings near the runway, subsequently bursting into flames.

The aircraft, which was carrying cargo, was destroyed in the fire and it is reported that the pilots only suffered minor injuries.

The aircraft, owned and operated by Nyasa Air Charters, carried the registration: 7Q-STB and had the production number MSN: 95 of 1979, when it first entered service.

The following statement was then found posted on social media:

 

We wish to inform the public about an incident involving a cargo plane that occurred during landing at the designated airstrip in Pieri Payam. The aircraft veered off the airstrip during its approach and subsequently crashed into a nearby residential area.
Fortunately, there were no casualties reported. The pilots have been safely evacuated and are currently receiving medical treatment for minor injuries and trauma related to the incident. The aircraft caught fire after the crash, but the residents of the nearby home were unharmed.
We would like to extend our gratitude to the local community for their swift response and support during this incident. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash to prevent future occurrences.
