#LIKONI CABLE CAR CONSTRUCTION AIMS FOR MAY 2018 START AND MID 2020 COMPLETION
(Posted 09th February 2018)
Austria’s Doppelmayr / Graventa Group has been selected to construct the proposed cable car connection across the Likoni Channel, a perennial bottleneck for traffic between Mombasa island and the southern mainland.
The company is a global industry leader when it comes to construction of cable cars and related projects and as such a very good bet to complete the construction on time.
The 22 cable cars can uplift up to 38 passengers each and the duration of the trip was given as just under five minutes but will cost a fee unlike the slower and often unreliable ferries where pedestrians cross for free. The project is estimated to cost around 6 billion Kenya Shillings.
In addition, to make commutes and general access for tourism and trade purposes to the southern mainland easier, will a bridge be constructed in coming years and the bypass from the Nairobi to Mombasa highway and Moi International Airport, known as Dongo Kundu highway, is also nearing the end of construction of phase one. When completed this will allow traffic wishing to avoid Mombasa’s jams and the often notorious Likoni crossing to reach their destination much faster.
