A look at airport investment in Africa

Worldwide, almost half of all passenger journeys flow through airports that have some form of private sector participation. In Africa, the figure is substantially lower for private airports. This is reflected in the sources of funding for transport infrastructure in general where the majority of investment comes from government budgets while private investment plays only a small role.

There are of course many different forms of private participation in airport development, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Ultimately, the choice of mode needs to be suitable for the African context and tailored to each particular airport. As air traffic on the continent continues to grow however, there is certainly room for more private investment.

. Find out more by attending AviaDev Africa and listening to the Financing Airport Infrastructure in Africa panel session where Koen Brinkman, Director of Airport Strategy and Studies at NACO, Netherlands Airport Consultants will be discussing what the relative merits of different funding sources are, the role of government in financing and determining where is the money coming from. Discussing these topics with panelists: Moritz Breickmann, Investment Director, AIIM (African Infrastructure Investment Managers); Nicolas Deviller, Deputy CEO- Ravinala Airports – Madagascar. ADP International Project Director; Alexander Herring, Private Sector Liaison Officer, World Bank Group; Gwenvael Ronsin-Hardy, Senior Project Manager, Airport Operation, EGIS Airport Operation (operators of ABJ, LBV, BZV); Fundi Sithebe, Chief Operating Officer, ACSA (Airports Company, South Africa).

The final preparations for AviaDevare now underway. Don’t miss this crucial chance to have scheduled meetings with the route planners and airlines for Africa, all with one common goal – to increase the connectivity to, from and within the continent.
