#SEYCHELLES FORMER PRESIDENT ALBERT RENE PASSES ON
(Posted 27th February 2019)
It was learned a short while ago that Seychelles’ former President Albert Rene passed away late yesterday.
President Rene was the archipelago’s longest serving president – between 1977 to 2004 – and came to power through a coup d’ etat during which he ousted founder president Sir James Mancham, who subsequently stayed in exile until Rene’s successor James Alix Michel then reached out to Sir James and saw his return to the islands.
Sir James himself passed away two years ago in January 2017.
A state funeral – details to be made available soon – is expected to be held for Albert Rene as was accorded to Sir James.
Condolences are expressed to Albert Rene’s family, friends and the government and people of Seychelles.
