As Kenya celebrates their Independence Day, aka Jamhuri Day, did good news emerge from the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Uganda.
Earlier today was another rhino baby born, to mother Uhuru who befittingly carries the Swahili name of Freedom as neighbours Kenya commemorate the anniversary of attaining independence from colonial masters Britain some 57 years ago in 1963.
This brings the number of rhinos on the sanctuary to now 33, making the Rhino Fund Uganda’s breeding programme arguably the most successful ever.
Congratulations to Angie Genade, the Executive Director of the Rhino Fund Uganda and the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and her entire team for making the programme a continued success.

But otherwise is all not well at Ziwa following the tourism wipe out due to the COVID19 pandemic. The closure of the international airport and lack of tourist visitors – no one was allowed to enter the country until the 01st of October and tourism arrivals since then can only be described as a trickle – stripped RFU and the sanctuary of income and led to the drying up of donations from Uganda’s business community as the economic downturn gripped the country.
Now more than ever is support needed to keep not only the infrastructure intact and staffing at regular levels, but also to step up the protection and care for these priceless animals, which prior to RFU starting the breeding programme had been wiped out.
