LATEST BIRTH ON THE ZIWA RHINO SANCTUARY OF THE RHINO FUND UGANDA BRINGS OVERALL NUMBER TO 32
(Posted 19th August 2020)
Just over two weeks since the last birth of a rhino baby on the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary has the Rhino Fund Uganda reported the birth of another one little one, number 27 in the long line of this most successful breeding project.
The male calf, named Jabali, was born last night just after 10 pm local time to mother Bella, who is now a 6 times mom.
Bella was among the first four rhinos brought to the sanctuary by the Rhino Fund Uganda, came from Kenya’s Solio Conservancy and has since then been at the core of the breeding programme which was launched when the sanctuary at Ziwa was established.
Ziwa’s rate of reproduction, attributed to competent management and a conducive environment, is one of the highest on record anywhere and has been mentioned time and again in literature and studies, when comparing such programmes across Africa.
Thanks go to Angie Genade, Executive Director of the Rhino Fund Uganda and the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and her entire team of dedicated rangers, vets and administrative personnel without whose constant efforts to keep the rhinos safe and healthy this would not have been possible.
She and her team, much maligned by a small section of business grabbers who want to reap where they did not sow, has to get the credit for this incredible performance over the years, with only one rhino ever lost due to the injuries sustained in a fight with the predominant bull, but no casualties as a result of poaching.
The sanctuary is open on a daily basis for visitors and overnight stays are possible on the Amuka Safari Lodge on the sanctuary.
