Belgium’s Flemish Region is currently preparing for the much awaited “Luchthaventram” or airport train line.

The new line will be an extension of the existing tram lines on Avenue Léopold III, which will provide a rapid connection between Brussels North and Zaventem airport.

In May and September 2023 respectively, Brussels and Flemish permits were granted to the project. Construction of the project is expected to take approximately four years.

Construction of the Flemish part of the line is expected to begin in 2025.

The new line will hugely benefit passengers but also staff to reach the airport by public transport and while an underground train station at Brussels Airport already exists will the new line better link the city of Brussels with the airport, adding choices to the various bus routes also in place. The existing train to and from Brussels North train station takes you directly and quickly to Brussels airport while the airport tram also makes residential areas and employment areas in between accessible. These include the many residents of Schaerbeek and Evere and the employees working in the numerous companies in Evere, Haren and Diegem.
