MELCHIOR NDADAYE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TO GET FACELIFT
(Posted 17th January 2020)
Information was received that the international airport in Bujumbura (IATA: BJM, ICAO: HBBA) is due for a major facelift and technological upgrade.
The initial work scope includes the rehabilitation of the runway and the upgrade of the airport control tower, but not yet of the ageing passenger terminal.
Financing has been agreed with China during the recent visit of the Chinese foreign minister.
It is understood that a second phase will then focus on the modernization and upgrade of the passenger terminal.
Presently are few international airlines serving Bujumbura, such as Uganda Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Brussels Airlines – once a week only – and Air Tanzania. Burundi has no national airline.
No passenger numbers are available for the airport nor are overall arrivals into Burundi.
