FOUR SOUTH AFRICAN AIRPORTS TO GET NEW NAMES
(Posted 31st May 2018)
Consultations are underway, as are suggestions being received, to rename four key airports across South Africa.
The most high profile airport among the four will be Cape Town International, while the airports of Port Elizabeth, Kimberly and East London.
The changes have been initiated under a South African government programme known as the ‘Transformation of Heritage Landscape‘.
While no date has been set as yet when the new names will be publicly announced and launched during formal ceremonies of renaming can the traveling public look forward to having to adjust their vocabulary at some time in the future as was the case when the former Jan Smuts International Airport in Johannesburg – South Africa’s main aviation hub – was renamed into OR Tambo International Airport.
An impromptu poll carried out by Traveller24 showed that a three quarter majority rejected a suggestion recently floated by a populist politician.
Do you think Cape Town Airport should be renamed to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Airport?
