Charting A Bold Path for Responsible Tourism in Kenya and Beyond

(Posted 23rd May 2025)

In a time when the tourism industry is becoming increasingly aware of its integral role in
conservation and community development, Ecotourism Kenya’s newly launched
strategic plan sets a bold course for responsible tourism in Kenya and beyond. With
climate change, community livelihoods, and biodiversity now at the forefront of tourism
conversations, the sector must move beyond good intentions and minimal action —
toward intentional, intensified engagement that drives meaningful impact.

A Philosophy Rooted in Balance

Our philosophy is centered on the holistic integration of communities, tourism, and
conservation; the foundation of sustainability. Achieving this delicate balance requires
collaboration across the sector, and for nearly three decades, Ecotourism Kenya has
championed this vision. For the past 28 years, we have strived towards strengthening
environmental stewardship in tourism businesses, engaging community-owned and
managed enterprises and organizations, building responsible tourism guidance for the
Kenyan sector and celebrating milestones along the way. See our milestones.
Our new strategic direction sharpens our focus revitalizing our commitment to
environmental conservation, community wellbeing and responsible tourism business
practices. Our goals align with global efforts towards addressing biodiversity loss,
climate change impacts and pollution.

Our Vision: To build a tourism industry that contributes to community
development, biodiversity conservation and economic sustainability in Kenya
and beyond.
Our Mission: To promote the knowledge and practice of responsible and
sustainable tourism by linking communities, tourism and conservation.

For the next five years we will focus on these five key pillars:
? Governance and Operational Efficiency,
? Strategic Partnerships and Collaboration,
? Expanded Value-Driven Service Portfolio,
? Climate Change Resilience and Sustainability Leadership, and
? Enhanced Stakeholder Engagement and Capacity Building
What this means for the industry

For our members, we endeavor to support them in their sustainability journey and
connect them to relevant stakeholders. For partners, we remain an ally and strong
advisor in responsible tourism. For the sector, a trusted voice for…. We believe that our
stakeholders remain the cornerstone for ensuring impact, progress, member success
and tangible impact. In our programs and initiatives, we will work to actively engage
them in our cause and support them.

We invite travelers, businesses, communities, development partners, and government
agencies to walk this journey with us. However, not just as observers, but as members,
collaborators, and champions of a tourism future we can all be proud of.
