Greetings!
This month has seen us make great milestones in providing welfare to our chimpanzee residents at Ngamba Island and conserving Uganda’s natural habitats. We had a successful fundraising dinner, commissioned the 1st hospital at Myende fishing village and attended the UN International meeting on Biodiversity in South Korea. We now bring you updates on each; enjoy this month’s bulletin. |

Dine in the wild dinner- dance |
The ‘Dine in the wild’ dinner – dance that we had on 3rd
18th October was a success.
Our goal was to have a fun filled night set in the ‘wild’ as we fundraise to feed chimpanzees at Ngamba Island Sanctuary. This we achieved; with the help of our relentless supporters and the Chimpanzee Trust team. We all had a lot of fun and raised money to feed the 47 chimps at the sanctuary for a full month.
Here is a pictorial collection of the event.

International meeting on biodiversity a ray of hope for conservation |
Chimpanzee Trust was part of a delegation from Uganda that participated in the United Nations Convention on biodiversity conference of parties. This was held in, Pyeongcang, Gangwon Province, Republic of Korea. Paul, the Project Manager engaged in round table discussions on Wildlife Management in a landscape Perspective and gave the Payment for Ecosystem Services case as one that has successfully conserved biodiversity in unprotected areas.
‘Being part of this conference has provided a new momentum for the Trust to explore new opportunities after a consensus was reached to increase funding for biodiversity in developing countries,’ says Paul Hatanga, Project Manager.
The Convention on Biological Diversity is an international treaty for the conservation of biodiversity, the sustainable use of the components of biodiveristy and the equitable sharing of the benefits derived from the use of genetic resources. The conference has a near universal participation of countries with 193 countries. |

The first hospital launched at Myende landing site |
The nearest hospital to Myende fishing village on Lake Victoria is over 18Km away. Transport to the hospital would cost over $10 but with no guarantee of getting the right medication after diagnosis by the medical officer as medicines were in most cases out of stock. This proved a challenge to especially pregnant women and children to access medical services.
It is with this background that we partnered with 4Uganda Inc. to construct the first medical centre in this village. The hospital that will serve over 65,000 people was launched this October. Special thanks to American Heritage School, Delray Beach, Florida, USA and Ms. Linda Greenberg for enabling this project.
