Complacency allows for another deadly hotel attack in Mogadishu

AL SHABAB ATTACK ON MOGADISHU’S ELITE HOTEL COSTS AT LEAST A DOZEN LIVES

(Posted 17th August 2020)

Following an attack on a Mogadishu restaurant less than two weeks ago, which claimed four lives, did Al Shabab strike again yesterday when their terrorists attacked the beachside Elite Hotel.

Casualty figures mentioned vary from a dozen to as many as 17 at the time of posting this article with many more reported injured.

In typical Al Shabab fashion did the attackers use car bombs to explode at the main gate of the hotel compound before others stormed inside, opening fire and indiscriminately killing people.

There have been unconfirmed reports that a Somali Member of Parliament and a top general was among the victims and likely the targets of the attack.

Local Somali and African Union troops arriving on the scene appear to have killed four terrorists but this second attack in August alone again underscores that vigilance must not only be stepped up but maintained at all times as complacency has time and again been fingered as the main cause for these continued attacks on Mogadishu hotels, restaurants, government buildings and troop installations.
