The Anse Forbans Community Conservation Programme (AFCCP) officially launched their on-land coral nursery tanks earlier this month at a ceremony hosted by the Doubletree by Hilton Allamanda Hotel. The coral nursery tanks are a sponsorship from the Mauritius Commercial Bank of Seychelles- Call for Projects 2017. The project also partnered with the Doubletree by Hilton Allamanda Hotel and the Marine Conservation Society of Seychelles.
Two tanks holding 100 fragments each are now open to the public to enjoy. The aim for the tanks is to create an awareness and to be used as an educational tool to the wider community and tourist of the importance of coral in our oceans. The corals grown in the tanks will be transplanted back to the reef once they are bigger and the process will continue. Not only are the tanks for education and awareness but also, should a higher than normal water temperature be experienced a stock of coral will still exist.
The chairperson Mrs. Lisa Laporte-Booyse thanked the sponsors MCB and thanked the partners involved in the projects – Doubletree by Hilton Allamanda Hotel and the Marine Conservation Society of Seychelles.
She stated, “it shows when we work together great things can be achieved!”. The Community group is encouraging schools to bring their children to have talks on the coral tanks. Any interested parties are asked to contact Mrs. Lisa Laporte Booyse to organise a date and time to bring the children to the tanks and have a talk. Contact via email on info @ forbans.com.
Soon all schools in the Seychelles will also receive a free coral poster that can be used in classrooms as a teaching aid.
Anse Forbans Community Conservation Programme is a non-for-profit NGO who looks at the environmental needs of the village of Anse Forbans. They work closely with their community and technical partners Marine Conservation Society to benefit their community.
