MwanaMugimu is a specialised unit within the Mulago hospital, taking care of malnourished babies and young children. Upon admission are children assessed and then stabilized first before gradually moved across the unit’s different treatment wards to put on weight before eventually being discharged home.

The Serena team, comprising more than a dozen staff, some of whom used their off time to attend the food delivery, was led by Country Sales Manager Allan Ampaire and Food and Beverage Manager James Odenyo. On arrival at MwanaMugimu was the team met by clinical lead Dr. Babirekere who provided an overview of the various processes and conducted a tour across the wards.

During the visit the Serena team also agreed to a request by Dr. Babirekere to add some specialised therapeutic food items in future deliveries to further boost the centre’s ability to treat the most severe cases with a higher chance of survival.

Across the year does Serena’s food donation come close to 8.5 tons of food items and over 900 litres of cooking oil, quintessential to MwanaMugimu to be able to feed the kids in their care, as alotted budgets would not be able to cater for all their needs.

Said Allan Ampaire to ATCNews: ‘This is all about giving support to the community we operate in. A hotel does not work in isolation but is part of society. Donations and help are very essential for some areas like health care and so Serena, since January 2014, is engaged with MwanaMugimu as a partner they can count on‘.

Serena Hotels, including the Kampala Serena Hotel, every festive season also operates a ‘Light up a life and not a tree‘ scheme where the hotel group supports needy children from a chosen orphanage, generously assisted by the clientele of the various hotels who donate gifts and cash. The children are on the 21st of December treated to a lunch in the various locations, courtesy of Serena Hotels, and then given the gifts they had asked ‘Santa‘ for, in this case ‘Santa Serena‘.
