ETHIOPIAN SKYLIGHT AIRPORT HOTEL – A SAFE HAVEN IN THESE DAYS OF #COVID19

The Ethiopian Airlines owned Skylight Hotel at the Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa hosts hundreds of guests every day. Some stay for a layover when their connecting flight takes off only many hours later while some use the hotel as their base when in Addis on business.
Managed by Karl Hala since October 2019, a veteran hotelier from Austria who earned his laurels mainly in Africa with InterContinental Hotels in leading positions as General Manager and Regional Director, more recently the Ole Sereni Hotel in Nairobi and over the past couple of months at the Skylight Hotel in Addis Ababa, has the hotel made a sharp turnaround in terms of service delivery, food quality and improved reputation with regular and new visitors.
Vastly improved health and safety operating procedures were put into place to cope with the volume of guests migrating through the hotel on a daily basis and new equipment was purchased and installed to ensure that in particular the hotel’s staff remain safe and healthy.

Regular training of staff is a key element to avoid complacency and to ensure that health and safety protocols are strictly observed and PPE’s, aka personal protective equipment is worn across the hotel by staff, beyond the masks and gloves.
It is Ethiopian Airlines’ intent to literally double the present capacity of the hotel with additional rooms and related facilities and construction is expected to commence in Q2 of 2021, after – hopefully – the worst of the pandemic is over.
This will make the Skylight Hotel, when the second phase is completed, the arguably largest airport hotel in Africa, attached to Africa’s largest international airport and home to Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s leading carrier in terms of destinations, fleet, passengers carried, profitability and additional auxiliary services like the Ethiopian Aviation Academy, Ethiopian Maintenance and a range of additional ventures.
