Effective 02nd of June will Ethiopian Airlines launch their flights to Chicago. Initially operating three times a week, leaving Addis Ababa every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, will the airline use a Boeing B787-8 for the service.
Enroute to Chicago does the flight stop in Dublin / Republic of Ireland, and while seen as a mere fuel stop are seats also being sold on that sector.
The return flights from Chicago (ORD) to Addis Ababa (ADD) will in contrast operate nonstop and leave every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
The new destination in the United States will preserve and enhance Ethiopian’s market leadership among African airlines and both business and tourist traffic to Eastern Africa and the continent at large will get a further boost.
The outbound flight, including the stop in Dublin, will take just over 17 1/2 hours while the nonstop return service is scheduled to take less than 14 hours.

Regarding the launch of the service, Mr. Tewolde GebreMariam, Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, remarked: Chicago will be our 4th destination in the U.S. and our 7th in the Americas. It is the third biggest city in the U.S. and one of the most important global aviation hubs. We will be filling a critical air connectivity vacuum as our flights will be the only direct service between Chicago and Africa. Chicago is the main hub of our Star Alliance partner, United Airlines and the flight will be operated together with United  to avail the best product for travelers from all over the U.S. connecting to more than 55 destinations in Africa. The flight will further boost the growing economic and people-to-people relations between the U.S. and Africa in general and Ethiopia in particular by enabling greater flow of trade, investment and tourism.”

From Addis Ababa does Ethiopian serve, often with multiple daily flights, such Eastern African destinations like Entebbe, Kigali, Nairobi, Mombasa, Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar but also connects to Lusaka, Harare, Victoria Falls and other southern African locations.
