2014 Race Report
The 2014 Fly540 Mt Kenya 10to4 Mountain bike Challenge took place once again on the foothills of Mt Kenya. The Extreme riders assembled on the startling early Friday morning for a gruelling 90km ride from the Borana Race Village through the Ngare Ndare forest and reaching the Mt Kenya forests in the foothills of this magnificent mountain after some 2000m of climbing. With the heat of the day beating down on the riders the next 20 or so kilometres were no rest with grassy single track and a rocky descent through the Elephant corridor and then a steady climb up to the 60km mark. From there it was full speed down into the valley via the fast winding trails through the Ngare Ndare forest and back into the savannah. After 4 hours and 17 minutes Davidson Kamau crossed line some 7 minutes ahead of second placed Davis Kinuthia and 10 minutes ahead of 2013 champion and Safari Simbaz team leader David Kinjah. In the ladies event only two ladies competed with Joyce Nyararu coming in ahead of Asa Forsman.
Day two of the 10to4 sees the numbers of participants swell from the 34 riders competing in the Extreme to 160 riders competing in three separate events. All events start on the edge of the Mt Kenya forest at some 10,000 feet in altitude. The Classic (60km) and the Rush (50km) then head uphill into the forest for some technical single track before winding their way down the mountain. The Slide (30km) does exactly as its name suggests and takes the riders immediately down the side of the mountain and into the savannah beneath and on to the finish line at 4,000 feet at the Borana Race Village.
The Classic contains a sting in the tail taking riders up a steep climb to the top of the escarpment overlooking the Borana Race Village and after a few kilometres riding on the top of the escarpment a steep treacherous descent follows taking riders back into the plains. From there it is hammer time with riders putting their heads down and riding at speeds well over 30kph on the rough tracks as they power their way to the finish line.
In the mens Classic race, the top two riders switched places with Davis Kinuthia piping his team mate and Day 1 stage winner Davidson Kamau into second. However for the two days, Davidson Kamau emerged triumphant with more than a 6 minute cushion over team mate Kinuthia. In the ladies event it was all drama with Asa Forsman pulling out after just 6km with technical issues. Joyce also suffered technical issues and eventually came in second some 5 minutes after winner Lizzie Cranfield. However for the two day race, Joyce emerged triumphant as the only lady to complete both days.
