Shimba Hills – Home of the Sable Antelope
Inland, the Shimba Hills National Reserve is one of the last few remaining coastal rainforests in the world. It is an important area for plant biodiversity – over 50% of the rare plants in Kenya are found in the Shimba Hills, including some endangered species of cycad and orchids. Shimba Hills is best known for Kenya’s only population of Sable Antelope. This beautiful creature with its majestic scimitar-shaped horns is a threatened species with only 75,000 left in the wild. |
|
Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary
Situated just to the north of Shimba Hills, Mwalunganje Elephant Sanctuary was established to provide a dispersal area for elephants to move from the Reserve to neighbouring forests and onwards to Tsavo. The sanctuary is a successful partnership between land owners and conservationists, reducing human-wildlife conflict and allowing the elephant population to thrive. |

The Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park and Reserve is a sanctuary where the coral reef is totally protected ensuring that the surrounding waters are replenished for the benefit of the ecosystem and the communities that depend on it. |
