CULTURE, SONG AND DANCE RANKS HIGH AS GHANA PROMOTES NEW TOURISM PRODUCTS
(Posted 14th August 2019)
Earlier in the year did a group of Ghanean students, studying business tourism, get in touch with ATCNews, seeking to have their very special story published.
They narrated their story and explained in details their objectives and mission:
They then explained further: ‘We are a group of final year Business Administration students from the University of Ghana, Legon.
As part of our course in Business Tourism, we were given a task to identify any aspect of Ghana and Ghanaian culture to market and promote with the modern technologies of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR).
After much deliberation we felt Ghanaian dance was an attractive aspect of Ghana that had remained untouched for so long despite the fact that several Ghanaian dances like Azonto had managed to gain global attention.
We thought promoting Dance in Ghana with the use of the aforementioned technologies would be a great way to turn Ghana into a tourist destination. We therefore named our group and the initiative WOJO, a phrase from the Ga language of Ghana’s capital, Accra, which means “Let’s Dance”.
We visited several locations in the country to find out more about cultural dances and spoke to some Afropop dancers to learn how modern Ghanaian dances like Azonto have been influenced by these cultural dances.
We prepared the following 8-minutes documentary (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXkFVPwRDLY) and made an attempt at creating an augmented reality game app that gives potential tourists the opportunity to take part in Ghanaian dance in a fun way.
At the end of it all, we were adjudged the best group and winners of this year’s Destination Legon Competition‘.

This remarkable achievement deserves not just congratulations and applaus but also to be given prominent mention by ATCNews, where tourism guest writers, both novices and old hands and tourism innovation from across the continent has found a home.
So WOJO Team from the University of Ghana, Legon – stand up and take a bow!
