The global IT outages which saw many airlines and airports around the world affected, impacting and even halting operations, has caused major chaos and travel plans for hundreds of thousands of travelers were thrown into disarray.
This saw IATA and SITA make public comments, explaining the situation:
Wrote IATA: “Air transport is among the many industries affected by today’s worldwide IT issues with Microsoft and Crowdstrike. We sympathize with travelers who face disruption because of these issues which are outside of airlines’ control, and we thank travelers for their patience while Microsoft and Crowdstrike deploy solutions.”
Wrote SITA: “The industry is currently experiencing a disruption across several applications hosted on Microsoft as part of a wider global Microsoft outage. The effect on SITA applications is limited at this time. We are monitoring the situation closely and are working with Microsoft to limit any impact on our solutions that is currently affecting several other parts of the travel ecosystem.’
According to CrowdStrike, the Microsoft platform that has caused the incident through a faulty update, the incident does not involve a security incident cyberattack. As Crowdstrike works to resolve the issue, we will continue to support our customers wherever we can.
It is expected that CrowdStrike will be subject to major claims for the outages and the damage caused to airline, airport, banking and other service operations.
