(Posted 17th March 2016)

Travelers from Qatar Airways’ East Africa destinations Entebbe, Kigali, Nairobi, Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar have yet another reason to continue flying with their favourite five star airline. QR’s hub, Hamad International Airport, has for the second year running captured the Skytrax ‘Best Airport in the Middle East‘ award, not an easy task considering the competition in the Gulf region. At the same time did HIA also make its way for the first time ever into the top ten of global airports, a sign that it has finally ‘arrived‘.
Skytrax also handed Hamad International the trophy for best airport staff in the Middle East, a further endorsement for this young airport which only opened two years ago and already handles over 30 million passengers per annum. When HIA opened was the airport globally ranked as number 75 and in the short space of two years claimed its place among the best in the world with many East African travelers now transiting in Doha as a result.
Qatar Airways Group CEO Mr. Akbar Al Baker, relentless in his drive to achieve 10 out of 10 across the group’s operations, which includes not only Qatar Airways but also the airport and other ventures, expressed his delight over the recognition by Skytrax when he said: ‘Being named the Best Airport in the Middle East for the second year running is a major accomplishment for Hamad International Airport, the home of Qatar Airways. To be announced as the first airport in the Middle East to be listed among the top 10 world ranking airports is a great honour, and is testament to the satisfaction that global travellers feel when they are going places through one of the most advanced, and passenger-focused airports, in the world. We will continue working with all our passengers and our partners to ensure that Hamad International Airport remains among the world’s best‘.

The World Airport Awards are the most prestigious rankings for the airport industry, voted by customers in the largest, annual global airport customer satisfaction survey. The survey and awards process is, unlike some other almost for purchase awards, totally independent and guaranteed free of any airport influence or interference in final results. The World Airport Awards are based on more than 12.85 million customer nominations across 110 nationalities of air travellers, and include 410 airports worldwide. The survey evaluates customer satisfaction across 39 key performance indicators for airport service and product – from check-in, arrivals, transfers, shopping, security and immigration, through to departure at the gate.
