IndustryAssociations representing the European aviation sector adopted a Joint Industry Declaration, announcing their intention to make Europe the most efficient and environmentally friendly sky to fly in the world. In line with the EU’s Green Deal objective of reaching climate neutrality by 2050, and to optimize capacity in the skies, associations representing airlines, airports, air navigation service providers, aviation manufacturers and business aviation have committed to joint action. They aim to transform the sector and work together to maximize capacity in the air, whilst further reducing the environmental footprint of flying. |
Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF)In the US, tech giant Microsoft will support the decarbonization of corporate air travel and its supply chain cargo through the purchase of SAF certificates from SAF producer and low-carbon solutions provider World Energy. The ten-year agreement will displace an estimated 43.7m gallons of traditional jet fuel with SAF. Also in the US, In a collaboration to strengthen sustainability in aviation, Boeing is partnering with NASA and United Airlines for in-flight testing to measure how SAF affects contrails and non-carbon emissions, in addition to reducing the fuel’s life cycle climate impact. Honeywell also announced that Embraer has successfully tested Honeywell’s HTF7500 turbofan engine on its Praetor 600 business jet using 100% SAF. Southwest Airlines announced an offtake agreement with USA BioEnergy, LLC for up to 680 million gallons of neat SAF over the 20 years. In the EU, the final adoption of ReFuelEU Aviation has completed the ‘Fit for 55’ legislation. Aviation fuel suppliers will have to blend increasing amounts of SAF with kerosene, starting with a 2% minimum blend in 2025, and rising to 70% in 2050. In Ireland, a new feasibility study highlighted the country’s potential to develop a SAF industry generating revenue of €2.55 billion by 2050 and providing up to 1,000 high-skilled jobs. The study was produced by SkyNRG and SFS Ireland, in a partnership supported by Avolon, Boeing and ORIX Aviation. Also in Europe, Airbus marked an important milestone after completing a flight demonstration of the Airbus A321XLR with passengers onboard. The flight lasted around 6 hours, with 30% of the fuel being Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to power the aircraft. Ryanair has purchased 500 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from OMV. DHL Express and World Energy have signed a long-term strategic agreement for the purchase of approx. 668 million liters of SAF via SAFcertificates (SAFc). Neste, ISCC and DHL Group have joined forces to pioneer and test a system through which airlines, logistics service providers and end customers such as corporates can credibly report the emission reduction achieved by using SAF to reduce their carbon footprint from air travel and transport. In the Middle East, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, is teaming up with Boeing to propel the SAF industry in the United Arab Emirates and globally. The partnership aims to further support the commercial aviation industry’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Emirates and Neste have expanded their partnership by solidifying their collaboration for the supply of over 3 million gallons of blended SAF in 2024 and 2025. In Saudi Arabia, SATORP, a platform jointly owned by Aramco and TotalEnergies, has for the first time in the region successfully converted used cooking oil through coprocessing into SAF. In Japan, Yokogawa Electric Corporation announced it became the first industrial automation customer headquartered in Asia to join Avelia, blockchain book-and-claim platform for SAF. Launched in June 2022, Avelia was developed by Shell and Accenture, with support from the Energy Web Foundation together with American Express Global Business Travel (Amex GBT). Avelia aims to aggregate global business demand for SAF, to help increase SAF supply and support the aviation industry’s progress towards net-zero emissions. |
New propulsions?????VoltAero has flown the proprietary electric-hybrid powertrain for its Cassio family of aircraft with 100% sustainable fuel provided by TotalEnergies. The company has also become the latest electric aircraft company to begin construction on a factory by breaking ground at its final assembly line for the Cassio electric-hybrid aircraft at Rochefort Airport in France. Archer Aviation also announced plans to launch all-electric air taxi services in the UAE and in India. In the UK, Protium is working together with hydrogen industry leaders to deliver an ambitious project that could enable hydrogen-powered aircraft to take off from UK airports sooner than anticipated. In Spain, Repsol has begun producing renewable hydrogen at the Petronor industrial center. |

Conversation with…Jean BottiJean Botti is the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Technology Officer of VoltAero, and is a co-founder of the company. What is VoltAero? VoltAero is a company that has set its sights on developing a unique airplane with electric-hybrid propulsion for safe, quiet, efficient and eco-friendly flight. Since 2010, the team that forms the heart of VoltAero has steadily increased the application of electric power in aviation, initially flight testing an aircraft called the Electric Cri-Cri – which was an ultra-lightweight airplane powered by four electric motors. The next step was E-Fan, which made aviation history in 2015 by becoming the first all-electric commercial aircraft to cross the English Channel. Since 2017, the company is developing its proprietary Cassio design. Cassio is based on an aerodynamically-optimized fuselage, a forward fixed canard, and an aft-set wing with twin booms that support a high-set horizontal tail – with its in-line electric-hybrid propulsion system delivering power ratings of 330 to 600 kilowatts. In supporting the Cassio’s development and certification, VoltAero is flying the Cassio S testbed airplane to validate the powertrain for production Cassio aircraft – in particular, the company’s proprietary hybrid propulsion module, which combines electric motors and a thermal engine. Tell us more about VoltAero VoltAero’s strategy is to focus on the need for efficient and safe aircraft in sustainable regional air transportation, providing a capable product line for commercial operators, air taxi/charter companies, in utility-category service (for cargo, postal delivery and medical evacuation applications) and private owners/operators. The VoltAero propulsion concept is unique: Cassio will utilize an electric motor in the aft fuselage-mounted hybrid propulsion unit for all-electric power during taxi, takeoff, primary flight (if the distance traveled is less than 150 km.), and landing. The hybrid feature – with an integrated internal combustion engine – comes into play as a range extender, recharging the batteries while in flight. Additionally, this hybrid element serves as a backup in the event of a problem with the electric propulsion, ensuring fail-safe functionality. VoltAero will produce Cassio aircraft in three versions, each sharing a high degree of modularity and commonality. Its initial configuration – the five-seat Cassio 330, with propulsion from a combined electric-hybrid power of 330 kilowatts – is planned to enter service in 2025. It will be followed by the Cassio 480, configured with six seats and an electric-hybrid propulsion power of 480 kilowatts; and the Cassio 600, with a 10-12-seat capacity and electric-hybrid propulsion power of 600 kilowatts. What milestones have you reached? VoltAero is well advanced in its development, certification and production roadmap for the Cassio aircraft family. The company’s pragmatic approach includes the validation of its proprietary hybrid-electric propulsion module by using the Cassio S flying testbed, thereby de-risking airworthiness certification for production versions of the Cassio aircraft family. Since 2019, Cassio S has logged 175-plus flight hours during some 210 flights, operating from 38 regional airports in Europe and the UK. In one of the most recent milestones, Cassio S achieved an industry first during September 2023 by flying with 100% sustainable fuel – from TotalEnergies, which is made from bioethanol produced from waste that originates in French vineyards. The no. 1 Cassio 330 prototype is now being manufactured; flight testing will begin in 2024. It will be followed by the no. 2 Cassio 330 prototype, to be used for the airworthiness certification program and equipped with VoltAero’s full-up hybrid propulsion module. In addition, Kawasaki Motors has joined the VoltAero industrial team as a strategic partner. Are there roadblocks that need addressing to facilitate the development of an electric-hybrid aircraft? Airports will need to be adapted for the use of electric charging installations. The VoltAero team is applying its 80 plus years in aviation electrical power to develop the chargers, while also bringing the company’s lessons-learned in airport infrastructure for the benefit of such air transport industry-movers as Air New Zealand and the Power Up initiative. Using electric propulsion as the sole source of aircraft energy could be a blocking point with airworthiness authorities, as well as for safety/reliability considerations with airline operator – while also requiring significant battery densities for sufficient power in attaining the promised flight distances. These are among the reasons for VoltAero’s approach in applying all the benefits that come from its hybrid-electric propulsion module. |
