| Iain Douglas-Hamilton, the zoologist, who has died aged 83, travelled to the northern Rift Valley as a postgraduate student in 1963 to study the social behaviour of the elephants of Lake Manyara National Park in Tanzania for his Oxford DPhil and remained in Africa to fight ivory poaching; his efforts were crowned with success in 1989 when a ban on the trade in ivory was imposed by the parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). |
