October – November 2015

Welcome

Our last edition which was termed ‘bumper’ led to a lot of email traffic with folk telling us how much they liked it. Also encouraging were the number of prospective advertisers showing a renewed interest. They, the advertisers are the fuel that drives this little digital magazine.

Another ‘bumper’ edition here has more news pages than ever before – plus it has a somewhat bookie feel, an unintended consequence I’m afraid. Just too good not to do. We review a total of five books, three Africana tomes in Miscellaneous Ramblings and two by our long-serving reviewer of the written word – Julia Lawrence.

Juliet Barnes is back, with the first of a new series on the old houses of Kenya. She was more than surprised when local government after reading her book The Ghosts of Happy Valley decided to gazette all of the old houses and turn them into tourist attractions.

Our new interview series launches in this edition, where we talk at length to the Tamarind Groups Director of Business Development Jonathan Seex. An out of the ordinary life story to start with, then lots of interesting chat about the Tamarind Group.

Simon Thomsett’s series on raptors in Kenya continues, with Kenya’s Magnificent Hawks, well written and with brilliant images. There was a lot of positive comments on his last article.

Lauren Giannini is back, and tells the story of Ololo Safari Lodge situated on the border of the Nairobi National Park – titled Gateway or Getaway. We welcome Stephen Strong to Travel News Kenya, who tells of his participation in the Laikipia Extreme Challenge. A well told tale, that will wear you out, metaphorically speaking.

This editions Photo Gallery is by Australian professional photographers Kym and Tonya Illman, who use quadcopters and camera buggies to capture interesting perspectives of wildlife.

Enjoy
