KENYA AIRWAYS SUFFERS RUNWAY EXCURSION WHILE LANDING IN DAR ES SALAAM

Kenya Airways’ flight KQ 482 this afternoon, while landing in rainy conditions, suffered a runway excursion. The Embraer E190, registered as 5Y-FFC, was carrying 49 passengers and 6 crew and landed according to information available at 14.34 local East African time. It appears that while evacuating the flight in accordance with emergency procedures, seven passengers were slightly injured and taken to a local hospital in Dar es Salaam for monitoring and treatment.
Kenya Airways’ CEO Dr. Titus Naikuni, through periodic media updates, went on record that the airline was fully cooperating with the Tanzanian Civil Aviation Authority which has launched an incident investigation.
One source in Dar es Salaam, working at the airport, has now confirmed that the weather at the time of landing was marked by sudden gusts of wind sweeping across the runway, something the incident investigators will no doubt take into account as they carry out their work. Added information received speaks of some damage to the right hand engine casing but initial rumours of a belly landing were dismissed as inaccurate.

The aircraft is incidentally the 900th Embraer E-jet which was delivered by Embraer with manufacturer’s production number MSN 19000577. Kenya Airways received the aircraft, which is powered by two GE CF34-10E6 engines, on the 11th of October 2012 and the plane has undergone regular schedule maintenance in accordance with manufacturer’s and KCAA requirements.
