Kenya’s Ministry of Sports and the National Sports Fund yesterday signed a comprehensive deal with Kenya Airways, aiming to provide the best available fares for national teams heading abroad for competitions.
It is understood that this will benefit all sports teams including those which are ‘self sponsored’ to reduce the cost of travel to competitions while at the same time flying the Kenyan flag when heading out and returning home.
The Ministry of Sports Principal Secretary Kirimi Kaberia, who was part of the signature team, explained his view on the deal when he said: ‘It is a major milestone on how we do sports in this country. It will help us save money and plan our travels which gives us a measure of predictability as we move forward. Furthermore, our athletes will be greatly motivated to be carried by the national carrier‘.
Also in support of the deal was the Jackson Tuwei, the Chairman of Athletics Kenya.
The first team to benefit will be the national women football team when they travel to Addis Ababa for their next World Cup qualifying match followed by the hockey national team heading for South Africa, also for World Cup qualifiers.
