Kenya has committed to build the remaining SGR link between Naivasha and Kisumu and on to the Ugandan border now that construction has commences in Uganda for the Malaba to Kampala stretch.
On December 03rd did Kenyan President William Ruto direct the resumption of the stopover for the Madaraka Express train at Voi station, which was immediately accepted and implemented by the Kenya Railways.
This was a result of Voi area residents requesting that the Madaraka Express train make a stopover in Voi to enable them to travel at night and facilitate their businesses.
“I have directed the Transport Ministry, and they have confirmed that from December 15th the train will start the night stop over at Voi,” President William Ruto subsequently said.
Notably had Kenya Railways also operated an additional train yesterday, 17th December, between Nairobi and Mombasa and back to Nairobi, to cater for the added bookings ahead of the Christmas season.
Many travelers now opt for the train, for cost reasons but also for safety reasons and have moved from transport by bus to transport by rail.
Kenya meanwhile has also confirmed that they will indeed match the Ugandan decision to build an SGR line between Malaba and Kampala and also begin construction of the add on line between Naivasha and Kisumu and then on to the Ugandan border at Malaba.
When both lines have been completed will it be possible to travel from Kampala, by rail as was the case in the old days, to Nairobi and on to Mombasa, making a longstanding dream become reality.
