#Kenya: Revised Park Fees for 2024 and important changes to Kenya’s Conservation Strategy

(Posted 05th October 2023)

There has been for some time a discussion about how best to ensure a sustainable future for some of the most vulnerable pieces of wilderness in Kenya. As a result, KWS and Narok County Council have jointly recommended revised entrance fees for the Masai Mara National Reserve, as well as all KWS-managed parks, reserves, sanctuaries, and marine reserves.

This adjustment aims to enhance the effective preservation of these natural areas for the enjoyment of future generations, not to speak about the massive additional revenues the park authorities intend to gain.

Masai Mara – move from 24 hour to 12 hour charging

The park authorities have already transitioned from the existing 24-hour fee validity system to a daily charging mechanism. Starting from the day of departure, if guests are not at the airstrip awaiting their scheduled flight or have not exited the park gate (for those driving) by 10:00 AM, extra day’s park fees will be applied.

This means that for late departures or guests with afternoon flights, additional day’s park fees will be incurred.

Masai Mara – adjusted seasonal fee structure

The new proposed fees are as follows:

Masai Mara National Reserve Fees, Per Day (US$)

Per Adult Per Child (3-17years)
01/01/2024 – 30/06/2024 $100 $60
01/07/2024 – 31/12/2024 $200 $120

National Parks – change in payment method

As of August 2023 park fees payments can now ONLY be paid through the Ecitizen platform. This has caused a huge number of challenges, some of which continue to affect park visitors.
