Kenya’s Najib Balala elected to key UNWTO position

NAJIB BALALA MAKES A COMEBACK AT UNWTO AS CHAIR OF THE AFRICA COMMISSION

(Posted 12th September 2017)

The ongoing General Assembly of the UN World Tourism Organization earlier today elected Kenya’s Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala as Chairperson of the UNWTO Commission on Africa for a two year term of office from 2017 to 2019.
UNWTO established a total of six such commissions back in 1975 to bring the organization closer to their membership as it continues to channel communications, programmes and other support through the respective commissions.
Balala has, following his election , taken over from Zimbabwe’s Minister for Tourism and Hospitality Industry Dr. Eng. Walter Mzembi.
Balala was previously serving on the Executive Committee of the UNWTO during his first spell as Minister of Tourism under then President Kibaki and is therefore no stranger to the expectations African nations have from UNWTO.
Congratulations are extended to Hon. Balala, known to this correspondent since he first made an entry into politics as a member of the then Municipal Council of Mombasa.
