TAMARIND GROUP ANNOUNCES EXPANSION INTO HOTEL MANAGEMENT

Kenya’s Tamarind Group, risen to fame over the decades for operating some of the finest surf and turf restaurants in the region if not the continent – the company owns and operates the Tamarind Mombasa, the Tamarind Nairobi, the Carnivore Nairobi and the Tamarind Dhow – has just announced that they will expand their hotel and property management division. Already managing the Tamarind Village near the Tamarind Restaurant in Mombasa, the group now intends to get involved in new hotels across Kenya.
Information received from Nairobi speaks of a new hotels of about 150 rooms to be built near the Carnivore Restaurant in Nairobi, an 80 room property in Kiambu, a 50 room property in Naivasha and two more Nairobi based hotels / residences at Rosslyn Estate with some 100 rooms and along Ngong Road with 120 rooms.
The company, according to details received, is also keen to expand beyond Nairobi to key centres across the country, a sound growth strategy as the importance of county capitals has risen since the devolution of government to local levels.
In a related development does the group also plan to expand their restaurant footprint in Nairobi with the establishment of another conventional restaurant as well as of a fast food outlet, both focusing on serving meat dishes. The announcement comes at a time when the hospitality industry in Kenya is struggling with a downturn of international business and trying hard to increase the domestic and regional tourism segment, though the medium and long term prospects of the country are fundamentally sound, considering the large quantities of oil discovered over the past two years and the onset of major infrastructure projects like a massive airport expansion in Nairobi, a new harbour in Lamu and two major new railway projects, from Mombasa to Nairobi and on to Uganda and LAPSSET, which will connect the new Lamu port with South Sudan’s capital of Juba and the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa.
