ICCA, the International Congress and Convention Association, has released details about the ranking of African cities working the MICE market.
Kigali’s rise seems unstoppable on the continent, as the Rwandan capital city has now taken the runners up spot, with Cape Town continuing to lead the pack by far.
No African city nor African country however made it into the global top 20 which continue to be dominated by the United States and Germany, Spain, France and the UK taking the top five places in country order.
Paris, Vienna, Madrid, Barcelona and Berlin hold the top five spots in the city order of MICE events hosted.

The establishment of the Rwanda Convention Bureau several years ago has been cited by regular sources in Kigali as one of the main reasons for the rise of Kigali through the ranks, leaving erstwhile market leader in East Africa, Nairobi, trailing and other East African countries, whose tourism bosses defied and belittled the call to establish a national convention bureau at the time, in no man’s land.
The Rwandan government has actively aided MICE tourism through a range of measures and national airline RwandAir, with soon 28 destinations out of Kigali, has also played its role to bring conference and convention attendees into the country.
