CHILD KILLED BY LANDING AIRCRAFT IN PIBOR / SOUTH SUDAN

A Kenyan registered Dornier 228 aircraft, 5Y-BRX, deployed in South Sudan for passenger and cargo flights operated by Southern Sudan Air Connections, earlier today struck a child which was playing on the runway while landing at Pibor airfield in South Sudan. The aircraft is reportedly owned by Kaskasi / KASAS and entered service for the first time in November 1982 before being registered in Kenya in 2003.
According to sketchy information received did the child manage to enter the runway area of the airfield, indicating a lack of aviation security at the facility but also lack of supervision by airfield staff, parents or guardians.
Pibor airport, ICAO four letter airport code HSPI – no IATA code available – is located a few kilometres from Pibor market, Boma State and about 170 miles north of Juba.
A single unpaved runway is according to information sourced just under 1.100 metres long and used for charter flights.
