03.32 A.M. EARTHQUAKE DEEP UNDER LAKE TANGANYIKA SHAKES REGION
(Posted 24th February 2017)
Shortly after half past three in the morning did a 5.7 Richter Scale earthquake shake the region around Lake Tanganyika with the tremors being felt deep into Zambia, Tanzania, Burundi, Congo and beyond.
The lake itself, some 1.437 metres deep and the longest fresh water lake in Africa, showed signs of activity too though the quake, according to the leading seismic research and monitoring stations, took place some 10 kilometres deep or 8.5 kilometres under the lake bed.
No reports of damages or injuries have been received as yet, in part attributed to the early time of the quake, but when daylight breaks no doubt will news teams and emergency response teams be standing by to hear from the most affected and close by parts of Tanzania and Congo.
