The April issue cover features the Donkin Memorial in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. This memorial pyramid was erected in 1820, and the Hill Lighthouse next to the memorial was built in 1861.

It’s an appropriate image considering that heritage and culture are key components to Nelson Mandela Bay as a tourism destination, to such a degree that the region (Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage, Despatch and Colchester) has been named after Nelson Mandela, which makes it the only geographical area that has been allowed to retain Madiba’s name and possesses qualities that resonate with that of South Africa’s beloved hero.

As a destination marketing body, Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism (NMBT) is honoured to introduce, and to be featured in, this month’s edition of Tourism Tattler.

I encourage readers to experience the world-class quality service provided by our accommodation and activity establishments listed on pages 08 to 17. The commitment by NMBT members to promote and conserve a sustainable environment and community, while reducing waste and energy consumption in Port Elizabeth is a prime example of quality tourism services (read more on page 20).

Moving on to my favourite subject, namely food, the feature stories on Organic Food for Conscious Conferencing (page 24), African Cuisine (page 28), and Food in Tourism Marketing (page 32) are of particular interest.

Yours in Tourism,
Mandlakazi Skefile
