RIP ESMOND BRADLEY MARTIN

Esmond Bradley Martin, a global activist against poaching and the ivory trade, was found murdered yesterday in his house in Nairobi. He was reportedly stabbed in the neck. Esmond, well known to this correspondent, had not long ago returned from a fact finding mission to uncover the routes to the ivory trade, where he had gone to Myanmar. Last year he published a damning report following a similar visit to Laos and he was reportedly in the process of finalising his latest findings when murder most foul struck him down.
The conservation fraternity in Kenya, in Africa and around the world expressed their horror and shock over the killing and speculation is rife over the motive with many linking it to his activities.
Last year did a colleague of Esmond, Wayne Lotter, suffer a similar fate when he was killed in what clearly appeared to be a targeted shooting when he was enroute from the airport in Dar es Salaam to his hotel. His car was blocked and one of at least two assailants then shot him in the back seat of his taxi.
Sincere condolences and deepest sympathy are expressed to Esmond’s family, friends and conservation colleagues.
