Six Kid Activities for Nairobi Weekends
Long or short, weekends make for a special time to bond with our children, after a weeklong of early mornings and late evenings for both working parents and school going tots. As special as lazing on the couch, catching up over special family-kitchen treats and napping for rest can be; there are great benefits to reap from taking children outdoors to socialize as well as engage in physical activities for wellness. Here are a number of activities from the Jumia Travel advisors, that you can enjoy with your little ones.
Rock Climbing at Diamond Plaza
The three meter wall gladly offers a beginner’s challenge for climbing enthusiasts and is the first of it’s kind in the East African region. The best bit about this experience is that you can all take up the challenge as a family, or can opt to have some of you as cheerleaders as the willing ones scale the height. This offers a great outdoor activity, as well as an opportunity to instill moral teachings on discipline and focus.
Feeding baby elephants at the David Sheldrick Orphanage
The David Sheldrick Orphanage is a sanctuary for orphaned elephants, also located along Lang’ata road, in the Nairobi National Park. The center is home to orphaned elephants, rhinos and most recently hippos-offering them a foster home before finally being reintegrated into the wild. Best time to visit is between 11 am to noon, when the babies come for their mud bath, play time, and bottle feeding.
Indoor ice skating at Panari Hotel
Yet another of East Africa’s first, the 15,000 square feet ice rink offers an experience of it’s own kind. Usually, professional instructors are present throughout the sessions to ensure safety, as well as give needed assistance to the beginners. Lessons for those seeking to go pro are also available, and so is a recommendable gateway to kick starting not just a hobby, but also to nurture talent which could turn into professional career. The ice rink is open everyday, compete with other assorted activities offered by the Panari Hotel on Mombasa road.
GP-Karting in Langa’ta
This is definitely for thrill seekers, and the bold at heart who thirst for an adrenaline rush once in awhile. Located at the Splash, off Lang’ata road and next to the Carnivore is the circuit track where the races are hosted. If this is not for any of your family members, there is paintballing as well as water activities that you can engage in.
Row and sail away at Uhuru park
This was the hallmark of our young days; splattering our little feet up and down the little island at Uhuru Park, feeding the gaily fish with bread crumbs and watching with so much excitement as they all appreciated the little feast, and finally posing for that one photo that loudly put you on the “been there, done that” wall of fame. The nostalgia will definitely catch up, and if it’s your first time, then you will no doubt appreciate the calmness and simplicity of life.
Get lost and found at Paradise Lost
So, you have that bevy of kids who have different energies, are all interested in totally different adventures and cannot be contained in one place? Well, then head to Kiambu road for an all-under-one-roof kind of weekend. Paradise lost, just a few kilometers from the city center will play a perfect match to your needs. Explore the century old caves, enjoy refreshing picnics by the lake, take up camel rides, face painting and nature walks all at the same location.
