I love African elephant ears when they flap.
I love waking up to elephant rumbles outside my tent.
I love curious elephant babies peeking out from under mom.
I love that elephants have a sense of humor and are playful.
I love that elephants are compassionate.
I love that elephants have an awareness of death and mourning.
I love watching elephants play in the mud.
I love that elephants can swim in the sea.
I love how I can’t control the tears that come when I think of elephants.
I love that I visit the elephants in dreams.
I love that God gave me a special calling, one I never anticipated.
I love all my elephant-loving friends and conservationists–both known to me, and the ones I have yet to meet.
Greetings friends and family near and far…
We have returned from Tsavo where Lynne was returned to protect the elephants and the other creatures that call the magnificent terrain home.
Lynne’s Kenyan family were there…one last journey with Lynne by our side.
It’s really quite an exceptional privilege to become part of the Kenyan wild…even if only for 24 hours…as it’s an awesome reminder of how small we all are compared to the overwhelming power and size of the land and its animal inhabitants…who are all watched over by towering trees under an equatorial sun.
We gathered very early this morning…before the sun was really up… to first watch the "nearly wild elephant babies" take their precious milk and to greet former orphans and totally wild bulls who also gathered. Sites…perhaps known best for her cheeky demeanor…was particularly lovely today as if she knew Lynne (who was very fond of this elephant) was coming home. McKenna, one of Annabella’s favorites, also came by for a visit and seemed to remember Annabella and almost offered a sort of embrace during what was an emotional morning. They all seemed to want to tell us that it was going to be okay- that Lynne – now a permanent part of their world – was going to be fine…was where she belonged…
After spending time, we found a spot under this gorgeous tree to give Lynne back to Mother Earth…lovely view of the valley and the elephants walk by using old, established trails quite often.
I told Annabella that it finally felt like I could exhale…that Lynne’s journey…a month to the day….was absolutely complete for me…as she spoke so often to her Kenyan family of resting in Kenya.
From those of us who went, to the rest of Lynne’s international family…we are so very humbled and grateful to have been part of this chapter and to know that Lynne now rests with the Tsavo gentle giants she loved so dearly.
