LOSS MAKING AIRPORTS ON MADAGASCAR TO BE CONCESSIONED OUT IN SEARCH FOR BETTER FORTUNES

Madagascar, besides its main airport in Antananarivo, also operates a further 9 major airports across the island and then some 44 secondary and tertiary airports, aerodromes and airfields. The latter are now subject to an effort to find concessionaires to take on the largely loss making entities, invest in them and generate new traffic to make them profitable.
The first round of tenders, sent out last year, led to the signing last week of agreements for eight airports, among them Morombe, Maintirano, Manakara, Vohemar, Mananara Nord, Antsirabe, Analalava and Antalaha.
From the government side was it airport operating company ADEMA, short for Aeroports de Madagascar.
The initial agreements will last for five years, then subject to review for performance.
Meanwhile however met tenders for the remaining airport with mixed success as only twenty four of the 44 were reportedly of interest to investors, leaving 20 without present interest to investors.
Madagascar is intent to up tourist visitor numbers over the coming years, supported by among others the Vanilla Island organization despite renewed storm clouds over the fate of national airline Air Madagascar, which partnership with Air Austral of Reunion seems to be on very thin ice right now.
