Malawian Airlines has yesterday launched flights from Lilongwe to Dar es Salaam, now offering an initial three connections a week between the two countries.

Operating Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays with a dual class, 67 seat Bombardier Q400 will the new connection make roundabout journeys via Lusaka or Johannesburg unnecessary and in particular traders will be looking to improve their business ties now that Malawi’s new national airline has returned on the route which was vacated by Air Malawi some time ago before that airline went out of business. Flying time was given as approximately 2 hours between Dar and Lilongwe.

Malawian Airline, which commenced flights at the end of January this year, is a joint venture formed in July 2013 between the Malawian government (51 percent) and Ethiopian Airlines (49 percent). The latter has, besides seconding the aircraft, one Bombardier Q400 NextGen and one B737-800NG, also brought management expertise on board to ensure that this latest attempt to have a national airline in Malawi will succeed.
