| How are horses helping protect rhinos in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park?
Doris, Derick, Igamalikho, Nkunzana and Nkhalakatha are five very special horses. These incredible animals are assisting with the battle against rhino poaching in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park.
Under the supervision of Dennis, a Section Ranger at the Nqumeni horse establishment, Corporal Simon Nyawo and Ze are two rangers who have close bonds with these horses and conduct regular horseback anti-poaching and monitoring patrols to protect the Park’s rhinos.
Dennis explains the importance of the horse patrols:
“Horses can cover much more distance than we can on foot. Horses are a lot more neutral in the bush compared to humans, because our scent gets masked by the horses’ scent. They make a good poaching deterrent.”

Healthy horses, roaming rhinos
Looking after the horses is very expensive, and there is a desperate need for money to allow for their care and prevent them from getting sick. It is vital to have veterinary supplies and supplementary feed for the horses, to keep them healthy to survive in the harsh conditions they work in.
Donations are also needed for equipment such as brushes, saddle soap and ranger equipment including helmets and tough clothing to protect against the thorny bush environment.

£20 could help buy veterinary supplies
The horses need regular medication to keep them strong and healthy, including wound-spray, de-worming tablets, vaccinations and dipping supplies to kill ectoparasites.
£110 could buy binoculars
Binoculars are an essential piece of equipment for all rangers, especially while monitoring the critically endangered black rhino. Donations are needed to replace damaged binoculars to allow the rangers to keep watch on the Park.
